Zakopane and the Tatra mountains
Poland's mountain town sits at the foot of the Tatras — the only genuinely alpine range in the country, and closer to Scotland than most people assume.

Zakopane is a working mountain town with a distinct highlander culture — its own dialect, architecture and food. The wooden villas in the centre are the reason the town looks like nowhere else in Poland, and the Tatra National Park starts a short walk from the last bus stop.
The trap is treating it as a day trip from Kraków. You spend four hours in a vehicle for two hours in the town, and see none of the mountains. Two nights is the minimum that makes sense, and it's what most of my Zakopane plans are built around.
Weather here changes quickly and the high trails close in bad conditions, so every plan I write has a second version: a valley walk, a thermal pool, or the Nowy Targ market on a Thursday if the ridge is out of the question.
Day by day
A sample route
Day 1 — arrive and settle in
Land in Kraków, transfer south through the Podhale valleys, and check in to a wooden guesthouse rather than a chain hotel. Evening on Krupówki, then dinner of oscypek cheese, żurek and lamb in a highlander inn with a fire going.
Day 2 — a full mountain day
Cable car to Kasprowy Wierch for the ridge views, or the walk up to Morskie Oko lake if the weather is kind. Both finish with an afternoon in the Chochołowskie thermal baths, which is the correct order of operations.
Day 3 — valleys and home
A gentler morning: the Kościeliska valley on foot or by horse cart, the Gubałówka funicular for the panorama, and a last market stop for cheese and slippers before the drive back to the airport.

Common questions
How do you get to Zakopane from Scotland?
- Fly to Kraków or Katowice, then travel two hours south by road. I arrange the transfer so it meets your flight rather than leaving you on a coach timetable.
Do you need hiking experience for the Tatras?
- No. There are flat valley walks like Dolina Kościeliska, cable car access to Kasprowy Wierch, and full ridge days for people who want them. I match the route to what you actually do at home.
Is Zakopane better in winter or summer?
- Winter for snow, skiing and thermal pools; late June to September for hiking, when the high trails are clear. April and November are the two months I'd avoid.
